Though a small Union, its members and branches are located in all the administrative districts of the country, and are serviced by 18 full-time staff who carry out its day-to-day administrative tasks.

The main challenge facing the Union is the restructuring of the Water and Energy Sectors, which has created outsourced and casual jobs leading to the dwindling membership.

The Union has therefore embarked on organising the Senior Staff of the enterprises in which it operates, as well as workers of the outsourced companies and enterprises. Small enterprises with a workforce of between five (5) and ten (10) who operate within the jurisdiction of the Union and are in the Informal Sector have also been targeted.

Programmes instituted to improve the services the Union renders to its members include, setting up of Occupational Health and Safety Committees within the Enterprises the workers belong to, organizes regular seminars and workshops at the Regional Council level to strengthen the structures and build the capacity of Branch Officers and negotiations for the inclusion of Exit Medical Examination for members who work in hazardous environment before retirement in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

PUWU intends to unionise all senior staff in the various workplaces covered by the Union, establish Savings and Credit cooperatives where they do not exist at the branches to strengthen them financially, provide other social benefits and continue to offer leadership training to its Officers to build a strong and viable Union.
